The Stillpoint, 2026
An interactive web application presenting a minimalistic, imaginary landscape where digital tree branches grow and shift in real time in response to frequencies. A hybrid system in which generative, aleatoric management of audio files meets the listener's own manipulation of the sound.
How it works
Slow sine oscillators, breathing and drifting almost imperceptibly, form a low drone. On top of it, field recordings are drawn at random from the archive and crossfaded into each other, never in the same order. Their frequencies make the branches grow, tremble and fade.
How to use it
- Move the mouse, or touch and drag a finger, to shift the sound in space: left and right pan it, and towards the edges of the screen it becomes darker and more reverberant.
- Mixer (tab on the left): master volume, the level of the field recordings, and one slider for every oscillator. Double-click or double-tap a slider to bring it back to its original value. Stop and Play pause and resume everything.
- Fullscreen: button at the top right, or the F key. Installed as an app, it already runs full screen.
- Headphones or speakers with a good low end are recommended: the oscillators sit between 40 and 190 Hz.
