Antonio Gallucci is an Italian composer, sound designer and sound engineer. Born and raised in Southern Italy, he lives and works in Tuscany, where his recording studio, Mercurial Studio, is based in Pistoia. Over some twenty-five years he has worked with museums, theatres, artists and international record labels.

His music moves between electroacoustic research, modular and FM synthesis, ambient-drone, acousmatic composition and generative systems. He treats sound as a physical material, reducing gesture, frequency and feedback to their structural essentials.

The experimental underground

Through the 2000s and 2010s he was active in the independent experimental scene. With throuRoof he explored minimal noise, analogue lo-fi textures and ambient drone, with releases on Housecraft, Full Of Nothing and Sentient Recognition Archive. From 2009 to 2016 he formed Architeuthis Rex with Francesca Marongiu and Francesco Gregoretti, a project between avant-doom and experimental ambient, with albums on Utech Records, Sturmundrugs Records, Zeitgeists and Midira Records. Their last album, Stilbon Is Dead (2016), featuring Terence Hannum of Locrian, was reviewed by the Italian magazine Blow Up, among others.

Sound for exhibition spaces

In collaboration with exhibition designer Vincenzo De Luce, he composes sound environments for museum exhibitions: the archaeological section of the Museo Civico in Solofra (Ver Sacrum, 2021), the travelling exhibition La forma dell'oro at the Museo Nazionale G. A. Sanna in Sassari (Au | The Shape of Gold, 2023) and the ethnographic exhibition A cì appartjn? Vicinati for the Musei nazionali di Matera (Roots Bloody Roots, 2024).

Mastering for other artists

For years he has also worked as a mastering engineer for other artists and labels in the electronic and experimental scene, at his studio in Pistoia: more than fifty releases across cassette, CD, vinyl and digital. He has mastered music by Italian and international artists such as Machinefabriek, Lee Noble, Gareth Davis and Duane Pitre, Christoph De Babalon, Anton Mobin, øjeRum, Giulio Aldinucci, The Star Pillow and Francesca Marongiu, working closely over the years with labels including Midira Records, Haunter Records, Prehistoric Silence and NETHER, as well as Boring Machines, Maple Death Records and Umor Rex. The full list of credits is on Discogs.

Sheffer Stroke and recent work

His long-form compositions and exhibition works are collected in Sheffer Stroke, his personal archive. In 2026 he released Hope for Nothingness as Something on the Los Angeles label Dinzu Artefacts, reviewed by A Closer Listen, Foxy Digitalis, IGLOO Magazine and Blow Up; he also began the live-improvisation series Cycle Music and created The Stillpoint, an interactive web sound application.
